Some of the best mountain scenery in the country is within a few hours of Seattle. These are the three day hikes I'd recommend first.
Mount Rainier National Park · ~1.5 hrs from Seattle
Road conditions: The last 17 miles to the trailhead are on a dirt road — slow and bumpy (plan for 30–35 mph). High clearance is preferable but not strictly required.
From Seattle: ~1.5 hour drive. Closest of the three.
North Cascades National Park · ~3 hrs from Seattle
Road conditions: The final 13 miles are on a compacted dirt and gravel road. Low clearance vehicles are fine.
From Seattle: ~3 hour drive. Commit to a full day.
Mt. Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest · ~3 hrs from Seattle
Road conditions: The last 2.5 miles of driving are rough — a high clearance vehicle is pretty much required.
From Seattle: ~3 hour drive to the trailhead.
The North Cascades are one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in America — and surprisingly few people go there.
The Pacific Northwest is massive and these three hikes only scratch the surface. All three use Seattle as the base — it's the right hub for day trips into Rainier, the Cascades, and the Olympic Peninsula. I have a lot more on this region — the Columbia River Gorge, Hoh Rain Forest, Ruby Beach, Rialto Beach and the sea stacks — and I'll be adding it here as I build it out.
